New aspect of farming code?
I just went out to smush a few minotaurs in elona on my monk and had a great idea, why don't i capture a lizard and get it powered up in about 10 minutes
all the other times i went in there were 3+ lizards, but when i take charm animal there are zero.. hmm

Animal spawns are random.
Think about it tho. Why would they remove animals from the area if someone has been farming?

ANet's To-Do List:
1) Balance skills
2) Fix bugs and exploits
3) Nerf lizards
4) Finish Factions
Yeah, somehow I don't see ANet giving too much of a crap about number 3. Hell, if anything they're probably thrilled that you want to use a pet. The last skill balance update was very pet-friendly, and the names of many of the Factions Rangers skills seem to imply that pets are getting even more next chapter.

This same thing has happened to me every time I wanted to charm a different pet. I think when you enter an area with Charm Animal equipped, yet no pet, you are forced to actually search for the animal.
